Some brand new HP laptops come with no Windows Operating System (OS) installed when purchased these days. Such HP Laptops come with a FreeDOS utility which boots into DOS prompt C:\ when switched on.

Today we will learn how to install Windows 10 on such machines to make it user-friendly.

Step 1

Creating bootable Windows 10 installation media on a USB drive

  1. Download ISO version of Windows 10 Pro 64bit from Microsoft’s Website
  2. Download the free utility tool called Rufus from this link and set the following settings on the Rufus utility tool. Rufusis an open-source program licensed under the GPL.
  3. Device: Select the USB flash drive or pen drive you want to use for the bootable (Mostly selects automatically)
  4. Boot Selection: Select the Windows 10 ISO you downloaded from Microsoft
  5. Image Option: Should be set to Standard Windows Installation
  6. Partition Scheme: Set to GPT
  7. Target System: Set to UEFI (non CSM)
  8. File System: Set to NTFS and Cluster Size: 4096 bytes(default)
  9. Click on start to start creating bootable.
  10. When prompted that all data on the drive will be deleted choose YES and wait patiently till the bootable USB is created
  11. When done you can close the Rufus utility and safely remove the created USB bootable drive

Steps 2

  2. Switch on the new HP Laptop and press the ESC key until the Startup Menu shows up like the image below
  3. Choose F9 Boot Device Options from the Startup Menu
  4. A list of Boot Devices shows up, choose the USB drive name shown in the listed boot devices and press enter to load the Windows 10 Installation setup
  5. Leave the settings on the Windows Setup screen that appears intact or make changes that suit you and press next ie. The language, time, and Keyboard method options that show
  6. At the next screen select Install Now
  7. An Activation Screen loads, enter the Windows 10 key if any, or skip the Activation and continue to the next screen
  8. Choose Custom: Install Windows Only (advanced) from the options that show up
  9. On the next screen, select the hard drive you want to install Windows on and erase it. If you have multiple partitions on that drive, you may want to erase those as well.

Warning: When you delete a partition, you’re also deleting all the files on that partition.

When you’re done erasing partitions, you should have a big block of “Unallocated Space”. Select that, click “New”, and once it’s formatted your drive, click Next.

  1. Windows 10 will install itself and may restart a few times during this process. When it’s done, a normal setup screen will appear to let you set up your username and password(optional) and other system options
